Tip 25 – When Walking, Don’t Leave Your Head Behind You

When walking, don\’t leave your head behind you.

Walking, Crown of the head leads diagram

Leading with your chin tends to push the neck forward as shown in the image on the left. This is a common habit in almost every movement. Leading with the crown of your head will help you feel less tense and you will walk more easily. The crown is the highest point on your head that is just behind your ears.

In my mind, I picture the crown of the head as above and behind the face, so the idea of “leading” with it seem confusing. Maybe a more exact term than “crown of the head” might be more clear.
Thanks for your excellent site. Cheers Robert

    1. Hello Robert and thanks for your comment.

I agree that this isn’t one of my better tips, but not for the reason you mention. As for the term “crown of the head”, much of the Alexander Technique is counterintuitive and because of that many people try to use their own terms which make better sense to them, but that don’t actually convey the correct meaning. “Crown of the head” is roughly defined in the image (the green arrow) and more clearly in the text. What I don’t like about the tip is the term “lead”, which is not well defined and not easily understood. Although it’s still kind of mysterious, I like the headline best: When walking, don’t leave your head behind you.
