To walk with more stability and power, think more about your standing leg than about your moving leg.
When walking, most people are more interested in the moving leg (the next step) rather than the standing leg that holds you up. Moving quickly is fine, but rushing the next step can lead to less control and a heavy foot strike. Thinking a little more about the standing leg can result in more power and stability as you walk, as well as a lighter step. Try it and see how it feels.

Your tips are so helpful in reminding me of what I’ve read in your book. I hike and have found that the biggest challenge is keeping tension out of my neck and shoulders, even if the crown of my head is pointing in the right direction. I would love to see more tips to help break this habit!
Hi Molly,
Thank you for contacting me. The tips and the book can be helpful, and many people say that they are, but they are limited because they don’t offer feedback and they don’t clarify misconceptions. Certainly they don’t offer a guiding touch, which is really how the Alexander Technique is most effectively taught. It seems that you feel that the Alexander Technique has helped you in certain ways, although maybe not in this particular case. Maybe it’s time to try an in-person lesson with a certified teacher. http://www.amsatonline.org.
Best,
